Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies arrested 11 people in a crackdown on street racing in Carson on Friday night, authorities said.

The operation was conducted in response to what sheriff’s officials called a “growing movement of illegal street racing and cruising.”

“Social media is used to promote the gathering of vehicles to participate in illegal activities and often draws upwards of 300 vehicles and more than 500 spectators,” a Sheriff’s Department statement said.

California Highway Patrol officers joined deputies in the crackdown, with assistance from the sheriff’s Aero Bureau.

In addition to the 11 arrests, 17 people were cited and eight vehicles were towed, sheriff’s officials said.

The department asked that anyone with information about illegal street racing to contact the Carson sheriff’s station at (310) 830-1123.
