Man shot by police was wearing mask, took menacing stance, LAPD says

A man shot and wounded by police officers in Harbor City on Wednesday night was wearing a mask and suspected of preparing to commit a robbery, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Around 6:40 p.m., plainclothes officers saw a man in a ski mask they believed was preparing to commit a crime near Pacific Coast Highway and Belle Porte Avenue in Harbor City, the LAPD said.

When uniformed officers arrived on scene and got out of their police car, the masked man turned toward them with his arms extended in a shooting stance, said LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman.

The man was shot and immediately transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Neiman said. No weapon has been recovered, he said, and no officers were injured in the incident.

The Force Investigation Division will conduct an investigation, police said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the unit at (213) 486-5230. To give an anonymous tip, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
