Plumber dies working in 20-foot-deep trench in West L.A.

A plumber working for a private company died Friday morning after being was found unconscious in a 20-foot-deep trench, officials said.

The man was digging in the hole and reported unconscious at 2014 Malcolm Ave. in West Los Angeles around 9:30 a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

The cause of death remains undetermined, but may have been caused by an electrical current, Scott said. The hole did not collapse.

The L.A. fire and police departments and Cal OSHA were investigating. Volunteers from the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team were also heading to the scene to offer support for other employees on site.
