Reader photo: Guide them along

Share

Although Petula Clark was most likely singing about an idyllic Manhattan, most downtown areas still hold a sense of the intrigue and wonder embodied in her song “Downtown.” Photographers have long tried to capture this, along with the present-day reality of those who walk the streets.

Photographer Alveraz Ricardez took this portrait on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. In an email Ricardez wrote, “I have been shooting this project for the last 4 months. It reflects a four block radius of downtown LA where I was able to explore a vibrant community of marginalized people and ordinary folks.” The photo of this gentleman, juxtaposed with the little boy looking into a window in the background, seems to capture one of these moments perfectly.

Ricardez will be showing more of his photos from this series in September at Blackstone Gallery in — where else? — downtown Los Angeles.
