Hazmat team investigates foul odor at downtown L.A. school
An evacuation was ordered for the Roybal Learning Center campus in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday after reports of a foul odor, an L.A. Unified School District official said.
The center and surrounding buildings housing district transportation, police and nursing offices were also evacuated during a student lunch period. Four adults had complained of symptoms related to nausea from the smell, police and fire officials said.
Firefighters were stationed off Beaudry Avenue and 1st Street on the across from where the children attend. Students were at lunch when the smell was reported, and they were not affected by the odor, Los Angeles School Police Chief Zipperman said in a tweet.
[Updated 1:30 p.m., Oct. 22: The evacuation was lifted about 1 p.m. after firefighters failed to detect any dangerous chemicals in the air, officials said.
The four adults who had complained of symptoms related to nausea from the smell were treated at the scene and released.
Hazmat crews tested the air but didn’t find any elevated levels of any dangerous chemicals, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jaime Moore. The area was cleared about 1 p.m. and no students were affected.]
