Authorities have identified a motorcyclist who died after being hit by a big rig on the 60 Freeway in South El Monte.

The crash occurred about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday near Peck Road when the motorcyclist fell on the road, authorities said. He was identified as Troy Dean Olson, 30, of Chino Hills, said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County coroner’s investigations division. An autopsy is pending.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Olson was traveling eastbound at an unknown speed on the freeway when the vehicle in front of him applied its brakes, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Kelley Moore.

Olson lost control of the motorcycle and fell onto the road, Moore said. He was struck by a tractor-trailer combination vehicle, causing fatal injuries.

There were several witnesses because traffic was heavy at the time, Moore said. Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle that hit Olson stopped momentarily before leaving the scene.

Authorities were searching for the driver, although the license plate was unknown, Moore said. One witness said the driver was in “shock” after seeing the accident, according to CHP logs.

Anyone with information is asked to call the California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles Division at (323) 980-4600, Moore said.
