Throwback Thursday: Fabulous photos of Oscars past (and one nude guy)

Share

The Academy Awards: a time to get dressed up, get your photo taken and party with thousands of your closest friends.

Or, you know, con your way into the theater, drop your jumpsuit and run naked across the stage in front of Hollywood’s finest.

That’s what Robert Opel did in at the Oscars in 1974, right as David Niven was about to introduce Elizabeth Taylor, who was to announce the best picture award.

Niven’s reaction? “I suppose it was bound to happen ... ,” he said, according to an April 3, 1974, story in The Times. The writer added that Niven said the man showed his “shortcomings.”

But don’t worry, we’re not just leaving you with that image of Academy Award ceremonies past. We’ve also pulled together vintage photos of some fabulous people fully clothed in honor of this year’s Oscar ceremony on Sunday. Browse our gallery above.
