Police and the FBI continued a massive manhunt Thursday for the man who opened fire inside a business on Long Island, killing one employee, critically injuring the company’s chief executive and prompting the lockdown of nearby schools and a shopping mall.

The lockdowns in Garden City, N.Y., about 25 miles east of Manhattan, were lifted a few hours after Wednesday morning’s attack, but the man identified by Nassau County police as the suspected shooter, Sang Ho Kim, remained on the loose.

Late Wednesday, the car police say he used to flee the crime scene was found at a park in Putnam County, about 70 miles north of Garden City.

Police said Kim, 64, of Queens, walked into Savenergy Inc. shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday and confronted the company’s chief executive officer and another employee. Police said he shot them both in appeared to be a targeted attack. The company sells energy-efficient lighting and other products and apparently had done business with Kim.

“The motive here appears to be … work-related,” said the Nassau County police chief, Steven Skrynecki. “There was some disgruntlement between him and the company he was attacking.”

The chief executive remained hospitalized in critical condition; the employee was killed.

Skrynecki described Kim as “very dangerous,” but said police did not believe he was a threat to the public. For hours after the shooting, though, they closed the nearby Roosevelt Field shopping mall, and several schools and highway ramps as a precaution and to try to capture Kim before he left the area.

Newsday quoted the suspect’s sister as saying that her brother was a “very, very nice man” who had a dispute with Savenergy’s chief executive over a business deal that had soured.
