Time for South Coast boys’ water polo tourney

Huntington Beach and Edison are among 32 prep boys’ water polo teams that will vie for the title of the South Coast Water Polo Tournament which begins Thursday.

The three-day event runs through Saturday and will be held at pool sites at Newport Harbor High, Foothill, Santa Margarita, and Corona del Mar.

Huntington, the fourth-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, is the top seed in the Corona del Mar bracket. The bracket also includes Corona del Mar, El Toro, Santa Barbara, Capistrano Valley, Ventura, Tesoro and Granite Hills.

The Oilers open against Granite Hills at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Edison is the No. 6 seed in the Foothill bracket. Heading the bracket is host Foothill followed by Dana Hills, Agoura, Los Alamitos, Servite, Edison, Riverside Poly and La Canada.

The other top-seeds are Mater Dei (Newport Harbor bracket) and Los Angeles Loyola (Santa Margarita bracket).

Girls’ Tennis

Ocean View scored a 14-4 nonleague victory Sept. 17 over Anaheim. Earning sweeps in singles play were Megan Tan, Kendall Nakai and Willow Medina. The doubles team of veteran players Tabby Butler and Jane Vo also swept.

The Seahawks (2-5 overall) opened their Golden West League season Tuesday and defeated host Santa Ana, 11-7. Tan won her three of her singles sets, Nakai won two sets and in doubles, the teams of Butler/Vo and Katherine Brown/ Marissa Pippin, swept three sets each.

Former Fountain Valley High Principal Kirk Kennedy (Administrators) and Edison athletic trainer Holli Jackson (Commissioner’s Award) have been named a recipient of the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section’s 12th annual Dr. Jim Staunton Champions for Character Awards.

Thirty-eight individuals and four schools were recognized in six categories (Students, Administrators, Schools, Coaches, Media, Commissioner’s Award). An awards dinner will be held Monday at The Grand in Long Beach.
