Football: Granada Hills’ upset victory changes West Valley League

In the biggest victory in Coach Billy Parra’s five seasons as coach, Granada Hills’ 22-15 upset of Birmingham last week has made the West Valley League picture a big mess.

“We’re a good football team,” Parra said. “I know our kids believe. It was a huge confidence builder.”

Leading the way was junior quarterback Ramon Johnson, who attended Birmingham as a freshman. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. He has passed for 1,037 yards.

But the key addition for Granada Hills (2-4, 1-0) was middle linebacker Jonathan Pena, who had missed five games with a dislocated elbow. He finished with 11 tackles.

Next up for Granada Hills is a Friday game against Taft.

Birmingham (3-3, 0-1), which was expected to cruise to the West Valley League title, now needs help to catch up with the Highlanders.
