Authorities search Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine’s home

Authorities involved in a sexual-abuse investigation of Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine carried out a search at his home in DeWitt, N.Y., on Friday but declined to comment on what they were looking for.

Jack Keller, a New York State Police spokesman, said troopers were called to assist the U.S. attorney’s office at the search. Assistant U.S. Attorney William Pericak said he “can’t confirm or deny” an investigation.

Two former ball boys for the Syracuse basketball team, Bobby Davis and his stepbrother, Mike Lang, have said they were molested more than 25 years ago by Fine, who is on paid administrative leave from the university. Fine has called the allegations “patently false.”

UCLA sophomore forward Travis Wear had five stitches in his right foot to close a wound he sustained while snorkeling in Hawaii. He is expected to sit out practice Saturday and is to be reevaluated Monday, when the Bruins play host to Pepperdine at the Sports Arena.

Djokovic out of ATP Finals

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the ATP World Tour Finals on Friday after Tomas Berdych rallied from a set and a break down to beat David Ferrer, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, and grab the last semifinal spot at the season-ending tournament at London.

Djokovic lost to fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic earlier in the day and finished round-robin play with a 1-2 record. He would have gone through to the semifinals if Ferrer had beaten Berdych.

But the seventh-seeded Czech twice came back from a break down in the second set and faced little resistance in the third from Ferrer, who had already advanced by winning his first two matches.

Ferrer will face Roger Federer on Saturday in first semifinal, before Berdych takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell shot four-under-par 68 in alternate-shot play for a share of the lead with Australia after the second round of the World Cup at Hainan, China.

McIlroy and McDowell, from Northern Ireland, matched Australia’s Brendan Jones and Richard Green (70) at 13 under on Mission Hills’ Blackstone Course.

Scotland’s Martin Laird and Stephen Gallacher were a stroke back after a 69. Americans Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar were tied for fourth at 10 under after a 70.

Australia’s Marcus Fraser shot a seven-under 65, taking a two-stroke lead over American Bubba Watson after the second round of the Australian PGA at Coolum.

Fraser was 11 under on the Hyatt Regency resort course. Watson closed with a three-putt bogey for a 68.

Scotland’s Steven O’Hara shot a four-under 68 and had a one-stroke lead over South Africans Retief Goosen and Merrick Bremner after the second round of the South African Open at Johannesburg.

O’Hara was 11 under at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate. Goosen and Bremner had 68s. Defending champion Ernie Els was six under after a 69.

Japan’s Mao Asada skated a clean short program in the women’s competition at the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow and led Alena Leonova of Russia by less than half a point in the last of the season’s six Grand Prix figure skating competitions.

Jeremy Abbott of the U.S. led after the men’s short program, followed by Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. American world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White led the ice dancing after the short dance, and world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany took the lead in pairs.

NASCAR fined Kurt Busch $50,000 for poor behavior during the Sprint Cup finale last weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He was penalized for making an obscene gesture in his car and being verbally abusive toward a reporter.

The University of Miami extended football Coach Al Golden’s contract through Feb. 1, 2020, adding four years to the deal he signed in the spring.
