Why Phil Jackson might have been a better fit with these Lakers

Share

Phil Jackson would have been better suited to coach this aging Lakers team than current Coach Mike D’Antoni, Times writer Mike Bresnahan said during an online NBA discussion Wednesday morning.

“Phil does not need speed or youth necessarily in his offense,” Bresnahan said. “He prefers veterans. He likes older players, mature players. He doesn’t need to zip up and down the court. Obviously that triangle offense would be much better suited for this team at this point unless somehow the roster gets younger.”

Clippers beat writer Broderick Turner was also in on the discussion. He said the end of the team’s 17-game winning streak may have been a blessing in disguise.

“It felt like it was a heavy weight on their shoulders a few times,” Turner said of the streak. “And I think this time it just came to an end to a good Denver team that’s very good at home.”

And speaking of teams that are very good at home ... the Lakers aren’t one of them. Bresnahan pointed out that their loss to a supposedly inferior team, the Philadelphia 76ers, at Staples Center on Tuesday was not an isolated incident this season.

“The Lakers have lost so many easy home games this season,” Bresnahan said. “It’s really inexcusable, a huge inability to guard their yard. It absolutely will cost them down the road.”
