Cal Poly Pomona faces Chico State in Division II basketball regional
If the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team has a home away from home, it is Bellingham, Wash.
Since Greg Kamansky became Cal Poly’s coach, the Broncos have won all eight games they have played at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the campus of Western Washington University.
Cal Poly would like to extend that streak by three games at the NCAA Division II West Regional.
The Broncos, 27-2 and regular-season and tournament champions of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., are seeded No. 2 in the regional. They open Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Chico State (19-10), a team Cal Poly has already defeated three times this season.
Cal Poly has won six consecutive games, its last win, 78-64, over Chico State on Saturday in the championship game of the CCAA tournament.
The Broncos are led by Mitchel Anderson , a 6-foot-5 senior from Temecula who is averaging 14.3 points and 8.1 rebounds.
Cal State San Bernardino (19-8), which handed Cal Poly a loss in January, is seeded fifth in the regional and plays No. 4-seeded Dixie (Utah) State (22-6) at 5 p.m. Friday. Western Washington (27-2), the top-seeded team in the regional, opens against No. 8 Chaminade (20-9) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
