Kings sign Robyn Regehr to a two-year contract extension

Defenseman Robyn Regehr, who has given the Kings the physical presence and stability they were searching for this season, has signed a two-year contract extension. He would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 6.

The deal, announced Thursday afternoon, is worth $6 million, according to a source familiar with the agreement but who is not authorized to comment.

Regehr was acquired just before the trade deadline in the Kings’ continuing effort to fill the void created by defenseman Willie Mitchell’s seasonlong absence.

Mitchell has had lingering issues following knee surgeries, and his future remains in doubt. Regehr, who played for Kings coach Darryl Sutter in Calgary, was a quick fit in Los Angeles and has helped anchor the penalty-killing unit.

The Kings gave up second-round draft picks in 2014 and 2015 when they got Regehr from the Buffalo Sabres. He had four points and 23 penalty minutes in 41 games with the Sabres and the Kings during the regular season and has one assist in 13 playoff games with the Kings.
