Former Salesian High teammates to face each other in MLS game

Los Angeles Salesian High teammates who went on to become first-round picks in successive Major League Soccer drafts will square off Sunday at the StubHub Center when midfielder Carlos Alvarez and Chivas USA plays host to midfielder Luis Silva and D.C. United.

The game won’t have an influence on the MLS standings since both teams are last in their respective divisions -- Chivas, at 5-15-7 is in the Western Conference cellar while D.C. United owns the league’s worst record at 3-18-5.

But there are bragging rights at stake for Alvarez and Silva, who were co-captains of Salesian’s 2008 state regional team.

“Before we played at Salesian, we played Saturday and Sunday games together,” said Alvarez, 22, who starred at the University of Connecticut before Chivas made him the second overall pick in last winter’s SuperDraft.

Alvarez has played in 23 games this season, starting 20 and scoring twice and adding three assists.

Silva, 24, selected fourth overall in the 2012 SuperDraft by Toronto FC after an All-American career at UC Santa Barbara, was traded to D.C. United for allocation money in July. Between the two clubs he has played in 20 games (17 starts) and has three goals and three assists.
