Patrick Reed backs up his talk on the PGA Tour
If this weekend is any indication, golf might have a new star in the wings.
Not only did Patrick Reed lead wire-to-wire in winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship, he displayed a bravado reminiscent of Tiger Woods’ early years on the PGA Tour.
Maybe he deserves to feel cocky with three wins in his last 14 starts.
“It just shows that I have what it takes to play at the top level,” he said. “I have a lot of confidence in my game.”
This is a 23-year-old Texan who grew up watching Woods dominate and isn’t afraid to wear red and black -- just like Woods -- on Sundays.
Last week he told reporters that he belongs among the best players in the world. Becoming the youngest winner of a World Golf Championship, and so quick to three Tour victories, seemed to whet his appetite for more with Bay Hill and Augusta approaching on the schedule.
“It’s one of those things that I can’t wait to get back out and play, try to get my fourth,” he said.
Bubba Watson figures that attitude can make a difference in winning and losing.
“A lot of confidence, and that’s really what it is,” he said when asked about Reed. “It takes a lot of confidence.”
