Kings and Capitals to meet (indoors) in snowy Washington

WASHINGTON — Greetings from the nation’s capital, where winter seems to be firmly entrenched even though spring officially began last week.

It’s snowing here, and accumulations of two to four inches are expected to build until the snow tapers off Tuesday evening. The snow isn’t sticking on roads and streets but it is slowing traffic locally.

The Kings arrived early Tuesday morning from Philadelphia, boarding a train after their 3-2 victory over the Flyers. Because of their arrival in the wee hours, they canceled their morning skate.

That means no advance word on whether Jonathan Quick will start in goal again or if Martin Jones will get the start. As Coach Darryl Sutter likes to say, be there for the song and you’ll find out.

The Capitals did hold a morning skate. It’s the second meeting in less than a week between the two teams, notes Katie Carrera of the Washington Post. Jaroslav Halak is expected to start in goal for the Capitals.

The Kings will again face former teammate Dustin Penner, who was traded by the Ducks to the Capitals earlier this month. Penner has two assists in 10 games with Washington and a plus/minus rating of zero.

The Kings’ trip will wrap up Thursday in Pittsburgh against the Penguins, who can clinch a playoff berth Tuesday, if you can follow the NHL’s explanation of who can clinch and how it can all happen.

One more note: Penguins Coach Dan Bylsma said on the team’s Twitter feed (@Penguins) that forward Evgeni Malkin would miss two to three weeks after sustaining a foot injury on Sunday. Through Monday’s games, Malkin ranked seventh in the NHL in scoring with 72 points.
