Racing! Good Magic returns after win in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we wish we were in Gulfstream on Saturday.

Our mission is to talk about Southern California racing, but we wander away from that quite a bit. So, with that in mind, on Saturday there is a tremendous card at Gulfstream. There are nine stakes races worth $100,000 or more and eight of them are graded.

(Next weekend, we’ll be talking about Santa Anita with five stakes races.)

The big race at Gulfstream is the Fountain of Youth Stakes with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic. He’s the 7-5 morning-line favorite, although it will be a shock if he goes off that high. He’s the top pick on virtually every Kentucky Derby poll, although he’s No. 2 in this newsletter’s poll by Jon White.

Free Drop Billy, for trainer Dale Romans, is considered his chief threat at 9-2.

We’ll learn a lot more about Good Magic, bought for $1 million, but learn even more about the Kentucky Derby trail next Saturday when Bolt D’Oro runs against either McKinzie or Solomini in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s our weekly contribution from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). Rob normally discusses a race, but given the unpredictable weather at Santa Anita on Saturday, he came up with this bit of advice.

It’s yours, Rob.

This lesson is called: Recent maiden winner now in an N2L condition.

“Consistent hard working recent maiden winners, are usually the best type of runners to back with regard to the cheaper N2L type of races, races comprised of only maiden winners. The mentality of many handicappers with regard to these cheap nonwinner’s of two events is just so backward, here’s what we mean. Many handicappers downplay the recent maiden winner, regardless of the level, giving them less credence than even multiple losers at this level, horses who’ve already been defeated at this same N2L condition, many having lost on numerous occasions.

“Think about that for a second. Why should a horse coming off a possible career catalyst maiden win, where confidence was finally gained finishing down the lane in front of the others, be looked at in a more negative light than a horse whose only win to their own credit was ALSO a maiden win, and since then, have lost at this same N2L level, many on multiple occasions ? Would you rather back a proven multiple loser, or a recent maiden winner? Something to think about.”

The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at https://www.westcoasthorseracing.com It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.

Santa Anita review

A pretty decent upset in Friday’s feature race, an allowance for older horses going 6 ½ furlong son the dirt. Dr. Dorr, for trainer Bob Baffert, beat another Baffert runner, and favorite, Ten Blessings to win the $58,000 allowance race.

This was a dirt race, not a converted turf one, over a wet track fast and contested in a light rain. Dr. Dorr won the stretch battle by half-a-length.

Dr. Dorr paid $25.80, $8.60 and $4.80.

“It’s nice to get on these kind,” said winning jockey Joe Talamo told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “As you saw, he accelerated well off the turn and he finished up great. He was ready, no question.”

Santa Anita preview

It’s a 10-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. but the weather is likely to cause many changes with the fields and some very likely scratches. The first five races are a mile. When’s the last time you’ve seen that? The feature is the sixth, the Grade 3 $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-old fillies. It should go about 3 p.m.

There are a couple of real good ones in there, who we could see on the first Friday in May in Louisville. Dream Tree, for Baffert, is the 6-5 favorite in the six-horse race. She’s undefeated in four races, including wins in her last two races by more than three lengths. Her first two races, at 6 and 7 furlongs, she beat Midnight Bisou by a nose. Both races.

So, the 7-5 second favorite is Midnight Bisou for trainer Bill Spawr. Bisou has raced three times, with the third time a win in the Santa Ynez by 4 ½ lengths. Drayden Van Dyke is on Dream Tree and Mike Smith on Midnight Bisou. Should be a great race.

There are three turf races, maybe but not likely, scheduled on Saturday’s card, the first, fourth and eighth. There will be a two-day pick-six carryover that could drive the pool up to around three-quarters of a mil.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 3 Lady Ninja (6-1)

Scheduled for the downhill turf course, this race almost assuredly will be moved to the dirt after steady rain on Friday and more in the forecast. ‘Ninja, sent out by Michael McCarthy, is a three-time winner on dirt who got hooked up in a five-way pace battle before tiring last time out. She seems better with a target and reunites with Van Dyke, who has won twice on her.

Friday’s Result: Red Lightning didn't break alertly, didn't show his expected speed, didn't run.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here’s a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA play of the day

SEVENTH RACE: No. 1 BP Southern Hero (7-2)

He ran better than his last fifth-place maiden stakes trial outing indicates. After getting bumped steadily from both sides early, he had a wide path and showed interest late vs. a solid field which included runnerup Missmerizing, who since captured the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. Rolling Along, the 6-5 morning-line favorite, is one to fear most but has been second in five of nine starts.
