Report from external review of NCAA enforcement expected next week

An outside authority has completed its review of NCAA enforcement procedures and is expected to deliver the results by the end of next week.

The review was triggered by a recent discovery that NCAA staff acted improperly while investigating alleged violations at the University of Miami.

The staff members paid a private attorney to gather information under the guise of an unrelated bankruptcy case.

The longstanding and much-publicized Miami case has been put on hold while Kenneth L. Wainstein, a former homeland security advisor to President George W. Bush, scrutinizes NCAA procedures and personnel.

“Mr Wainstein has completed the necessary interviews and review of information and is now in the process of preparing a final report,” said Bob Williams, NCAA vice president of communications. “We will release the results of the review following the completion of the report.”

Previously, NCAA President Mark Emmert said that Wainstein’s report might also take into account controversial investigations of the USC football program and UCLA basketball recruits. Former USC assistant coach Todd McNair has an ongoing defamation suit against the association.
