Injured Lindsey Vonn wins sixth straight World Cup downhill title
How good is Lindsey Vonn? She wins titles even when sidelined by a serious knee injury.
Vonn won her sixth straight World Cup downhill title after Wednesday’s race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, was canceled because of fog. The cancellation allowed Vonn to win the title by one point over Tina Maze of Slovenia.
“Omg I won the World Cup Downhill title!!!!! 6 in a row with a bum knee! Everything in life comes back around” Vonn tweeted after the race was canceled.
Vonn’s downhill trophy gives her a World Cup record 17th title, surpassing Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proell. The 28-year-old Vonn has won four overall titles and 13 in individual disciplines.
Maze only needed to finish in the top 14 on Wednesday to take the title from Vonn. She was gracious in defeat, tweeting “I guess the DH globe belongs to someone else, Congratulations Lindsey! What goes around comes around!”
The “What goes around comes around” reference by Maze and “Everything in life comes back around” by Vonn refers to the fact Vonn was denied a fourth straight overall title two years ago when weather canceled the season-ending giant slalom in Lenzerheide. Vonn lost by three points to Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany.
Vonn raced in only five of the seven downhills this season. She was injured on Feb. 5 when she crashed during a super-G race in Schladming, Austria. Vonn tore her anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in her right knee and broke a bone in her lower right leg. She is expected to race again next season.
