Alternate USC football uniforms? Not this season, but maybe in future

USC linebacker Su’a Cravens discusses alternate uniforms at Pac-12 media days.

The USC football team could embrace an alternate uniform in the near future.

Trojans Coach Steve Sarkisian and players have already begun to deviate from traditional cardinal and gold attire.

On Friday during Pac-12 Conference media days, Sarkisian wore a gray polo shirt with lime green trim and quarterback Cody Kessler and linebacker Su’a Cravens both sported black polos.

The only cardinal and gold that could be seen on the three Trojans was a small USC logo on the corner of their chests.

USC won’t wear an alternate uniform this season, Sarkisian said, but he left the future open for discussion.

When asked whose opinion carried the most weight in what has become a uniform debate, Sarkisian favored his players.

“They are the ones who have to perform,” Sarkisian said. “But I am also very aware of our tradition, I am very aware of our fans, I am very aware of potential recruits.”

Cravens, a junior, said he was “all about tradition,” before adding that he “wouldn’t mind having a matte-black uniform.”

Sarkisian said players also have expressed interest in an all-white combination, which is worn at practice.

USC introduced a metallic-tinged helmet during the 2014 season and it will return in 2015.

“Love the shiny helmets,” Cravens said.
