Canada: Ditch the skis for snowshoes at B.C.’s Powder King
With more than 41 feet of annual snowfall, the Rocky Mountains of northern British Columbia have no shortage of powder. But you don’t have to be an expert skier to enjoy it at the aptly named Powder King, about two hours north of Canada‘s Prince George.
If you want to stash the skis or snowboard for a bit, the resort says you can lash on snowshoes for a different kind of outdoor winter adventure.
Powder King sits at just 3,000 feet, but it’s in a snow belt that provides good snowshoeing conditions from October to June.
The resort has three new trails this winter. The easiest trek is along the Wanderer, a half-mile stretch through the pines. The mid-level Explorer covers 1.3 miles with beautiful views of the McMurray Range. For the heartier, more experienced group, the Challenger offers a six- to seven-mile adventure through forests and meadows.
Snowshoe rental is available for about $15. There’s no additional charge to use the trails.
The easiest way to reach Powder King is by flying from the L.A. area to Prince George either on Air Canada or WestJet. From there, various bus companies make the 120-mile drive into the wilderness. Alternatively, it’s an 11 1/2-hour drive from Vancouver, about 610 miles
Powder King offers basic, hostel-style overnight lodging. For those seeking fancier digs, the staff can help arrange rentals at posh, private cabins in the McKenzie region.
