Canada: Fairmont Banff Springs holds 125th anniversary contest

The Fairmont Banff Springs, one of Canada’s most majestic hotels, will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a contest in which entrants can win one-, two- and three-night stays at the hotel in Alberta’s Banff National Park.

Winners of the “125 Years, 125 Nights – The Fairmont Banff Springs Pay It Forward” competition will be chosen throughout 2013. The hotel staff will select the first few winners, but it will then be up to those winners to “pay it forward” by selecting other entrants.

People can nominate friends or family members on Facebook. They must first “like” the historic hotel and then click on the “125 Years/125 Nights” link. They must tell why the nominee deserves to win.

The lodge, dubbed “the Castle in the Rockies,” opened June 1, 1888, as an attempt to lure visitors from the East by rail to the relatively untamed West. The hotel was the brainchild of William Cornelius Van Horne, general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

“Since we can’t export the scenery, we’ll have to import the tourists,” he said of his plan, which became a huge success.

Guests have included Queen Elizabeth, Helen Keller and Marilyn Monroe.
