Angels fall to White Sox, beat Royals in split-squad spring games

AT THE PLATE: Mike Trout tripled and scored on Albert Pujols’ sacrifice fly in the first inning against the White Sox and is batting .500 (eight for 16) with six runs and four runs batted in for the spring. Marc Krauss had two hits and is batting .500 (five for 10) this spring, and Carlos Perez had two hits and three RBIs. Kyle Kubitza went three for five with a home run and two runs, and Efren Navarro went three for five with a double and a run against the Royals at Surprise Stadium. Josh Rutledge (two hits, RBI) and Alex Yarbrough (two hits, one run, one RBI) had good games, and Daniel Robertson drove in the winning run with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly.

ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Andrew Heaney gave up two runs and five hits in three innings against the White Sox, striking out two and walking two, but he minimized damage in the first, giving up one run after Chicago loaded the bases with no outs, and got Conor Gillaspie to fly to left with the bases loaded to end the third. Cory Rasmus gave up a grand slam to Adam LaRoche in the fourth. Right-hander Nick Tropeano, who is competing with Heaney for the fifth rotation spot, gave up a pair of unearned runs and four hits in 3 1/3 innings against the Royals, striking out one and walking one.

EXTRA BASES: In addition to hitting a double and driving in two runs against the Royals, Collin Cowgill made a diving catch in center field for the first out of the first inning. … Utility infield candidate Taylor Featherston, making his first spring appearance at second base, turned a nice double play in the eighth inning and had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth against the White Sox. … Right-hander Albert Suarez and left-hander Edgar Ibarra were reassigned to minor league camp.
