New musical shows by ‘Wicked’ composer coming to Princess cruise ships

The newest Broadway-style musical you see may be in the Caribbean or Mexico, or somewhere in between. “Wicked” and “Pippin” composer Stephen Schwartz will oversee four musical shows that are scheduled to make their debut on Princess cruise ships in coming years.

Princess Cruises announced Thursday that it’s the first such entertainment partnership for the line.

The first musical to be produced will be called “Magic to Do.” It’s scheduled to debut aboard the Crown Princess next fall, according to a statement from Princess.

There are no details on a storyline, but “Magic” will feature some of Schwartz’s most famous compositions. He’ll write an original song for the show too.

Schwartz, who has worked in entertainment for more than four decades, in the 1970s wrote a one-act Broadway musical featuring magician Doug Henning called “The Magic Show.”

He has won four Grammys and three Academy Awards, including best original song Oscars for “Colors of the Wind” from “Pocahontas” (1995), with Alan Menken; and “When You Believe” from “The Prince of Egypt” (1998).

In the new show, special effects master Jim Steinmeyer will bring magic moments of illusions to the musical too. Other “Magic” team members include director Gabriel Barre (the national “Pippin” stage tour) and Don Franz (associate producer of stage shows of “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” on Broadway).

If you want to be in the show, tryouts for singers, dancers and magicians are being held in New York and Toronto, with Los Angeles and Vancouver to follow.
