Chrysler recalling nearly 46,000 Ram 1500 trucks over software glitch
Chrysler is recalling nearly 46,000 Ram 1500 trucks to fix a problem with the vehicles’ stability control software.
The company says 45,961 Ram 1500 trucks from the 2013 model year have an error in the Electronic Stability Control that can disable the system when the trucks are started. The issue affects only four-wheel-drive models.
With the ESC system disabled, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the risk of a crash is more likely.
No injuries or accidents have been reported as a result of this error, according to Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne.
Owners who notice the ESC Off light illuminated on their Ram 1500 trucks should assume that manually turning it back on may not necessarily reengage the system, Mayne said.
Chrysler dealers will fix the problem with a reflash of the trucks’ computers at no charge to customers. The recall is expected to begin in August.
The problem was discovered by dealers, and Chrysler received no complaints from owners, Mayne said. The recall also affects an additional 21,000 trucks in Canada and 1,400 in Mexico.
This is the second recall of Ram’s 1500 truck in recent months. In June, the automaker recalled about 30,000 of the vehicles to fix a faulty warning light in the dashboard.
The news hasn’t all been glum for Ram’s 1500 truck. Consumer Reports this week named the truck its top pick for full-size pickups, and Highway 1’s own review found the Ram 1500 V-6 model an excellent alternative to the more thirsty V-8’s on the market.
