Indian Chief roars into history with ‘Final Edition’
Legendary street dream manufacturer Indian Motorcycles has taken the wraps off its 2013 Indian Chief Vintage Final Edition -- the last of its kind, and the end of a 111-year era of American motorcycle history.
Only 25 have been made, and only 25 will be sold.
Priced at $37,599, and almost unnecessarily described as “collectible,” the Final Edition will be sold fully dressed -- with leather seats, leather fringe, leather saddlebags and chrome everywhere -- and painted in vintage Indian red, black and gold. Each unit will sport a “custom-designed numbered emblem” to mark it as one of a limited run.
The machine made its official debut Friday in Long Beach at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show, where its handlers stressed that this is only the end of a model, not a line. Many more Indians are coming, Indian reps said -- hinting that customers can expect to see the historic brand attached to new styles, aimed at new segments of the market, within the next few months.
Like its fellow Indians, the Final is a massive V-twin, six-speed, belt-driven, fuel-injected, air-cooled beast, with spoked wheels and white-wall tires.
It’s the last of the Kings Mountain-era Indians, a tribute to the North Carolina factory that turned out the great road hogs. Last year, after being sold to Polaris Industries, Indian was moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa, where Polaris manufactures its Victory motorcycles.
