L.A. Times releases first e-book, ‘A Nightmare Made Real’

Moving into a new market, the Los Angeles Times on Monday will release its first e-book, “A Nightmare Made Real,” by staff writer Christopher Goffard.

“Nightmare” is the first of eight to 10 titles The Times plans to release in the coming year. The expansion into e-books will enable the news organization to leverage its content into models “that expand the reach of our unique storytelling,” Times President Kathy Thompson said.

“A Nightmare Made Real” is an expanded version of Goffard’s two-part series this summer on Louis Gonzalez III, a Las Vegas banker accused of kidnapping, torture and sexual assault.

The e-book will be available for Kindle, Nook and iBooks for 99 cents. The expanded version of “Nightmare” includes more detailed portraits of key characters and Goffard’s account of how an unlikely tip led to his narrative.

“E-books offer an exciting opportunity to take The Times’ world-class journalism and present it as a different reading experience,” Times Editor Russ Stanton said. “We’re excited to release titles that span our areas of expertise and can be easily and conveniently accessed.”
