At $24.5 million, Angelina Jolie’s big splash was Los Feliz’s top home sale last year
Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie has closed sale on the Cecil B. DeMille estate, a Los Feliz mansion once owned by the early filmmaker, according to real estate sources not authorized to comment on the deal.
The scenic hillsides of Los Feliz come from shaky beginnings, but since then, the neighborhood’s allure has grown.
Home buyers love the views of Griffith Park, architects love the challenges presented by the rugged lots and Los Feliz has grown into a hot spot filled with luxury mansions and architectural gems.
In 2017, there were 72 single-family home sales of $2 million or more in Los Feliz, up from 61 the previous year. There were 11 sales of $4 million or more last year, or three more than in 2016.
$24.5 million – De Mille Drive
Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie made headlines in June with the purchase of an estate once owned by filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille.
The sprawling classical-style mansion, built in 1913, was home to DeMille for roughly 40 years. After his death in 1959, it remained in the movie mogul’s family for three decades, until it was sold in 1988.
The roughly two-acre estate sits behind gates in Laughlin Park. Period details such as delicate molding, scaled formal areas and arched French doors mix with modern upgrades.
The 11,000 square feet of interior space also hold a grand foyer, a wood-paneled dining room, four fireplaces and six bedrooms.
Brett Lawyer and Rayni Williams of Hilton & Hyland, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, were the listing agents.
$9.7 million – De Mille Drive
Also selling in Laughlin Park in May was this Spanish-style home formerly owned by architectural conservator and designer Xorin Balbes. It had been listed for $10.75 million, records show.
An entry courtyard with a fire pit sits off the entrance of the five-bedroom home, which has 7,935 square feet of interior space. Living areas include a formal dining room, a theater and indoor-outdoor lounge. The grand living room sits beneath a web of wood beams.
Outside, a swimming pool is flanked by lounge areas and a garden.
Billy Rose of the Agency was the listing agent. Melissa Alt of Douglas Elliman represented the buyer.
$7.7 million – High Oak Drive
This contemporary pad, which listed for sale in late May and sold in about two months, sits on a flat promontory at the end of a private road.
Oversized wood doors open to 4,495 square feet of airy living spaces filled with floor-to-ceiling windows that take in the city and Griffith Park. A motorized wall of glass opens to a pool and spa.
Upstairs, the master suite features access to a balcony wrapping around the home’s upper level.
Paul Lester of the Agency and Douglas Stockley of eXp Realty of California were the listing agents. Juliette Hohnen of Douglas Elliman represented the buyer.
$5.89 million – East Live Oak Drive
A motor court lined with oak trees and agave plants approaches this 1920s estate, which sold in October to television and film producer Stephanie Savage.
Inside, floors of hardwood and terra cotta tile line nearly 5,000 square feet of living space.
The airy dining and living room both open to terraces overlooking the tiered backyard, which features lawns surrounding a pool and spa. The grounds also hold a guesthouse with a kitchen and detached sauna.
Aileen Comora and Paul Lester of the Agency held the listing. Jeff Yarbrough of Keller Williams Realty represented the buyer.
$4.9 million – Nottingham Place
The Wong Residence, a modernist home once owned by Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson, changed hands in April for about $100,000 less than the asking price.
Built in 1969 by architecture firm Buff and Hensman, the chic post-and-beam features 2,835 square feet of living space complete with hardwood floors, an updated kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows.
