TV ratings: With help from holiday special, NBC ties CBS in key demo

CBS tops Wednesday night TV ratings with 8.2 million viewers, ties with NBC for first in key demo

Looks like Mariah Carey's botched performance didn't deter viewers from tuning in to NBC's "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" on Wednesday night.

The annual tree-lighting special topped the night overall, with about 9.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings.

It tied for fourth in the key 18-to-49-year-old demographic with NBC's "Saturday Night Live Christmas" special. Both posted ratings of 1.9 in the key demo.

The ratings for the hourlong broadcast were slightly lower than last year's "Rockefeller" special, which drew in 9.86 million viewers and a rating of 2.3 in the key demo.

The "SNL" special that followed racked up about 6.2 million viewers, making it the eighth-most-watched program of the night.

The network tied for No. 1 with CBS in the key demo, both averaging a rating of 1.9. NBC was second overall with 7.2 million viewers.

CBS, which aired "Survivor" and "Stalker," was the most-watched network of the night overall, with about 8.3 million viewers.

"Survivor" was the third-most-watched program of the night, with 8.6 million viewers. With a rating of 2.1 in the key demo, the show tied for second with ABC's "black-ish." "Stalker" pulled in about 7.5 million viewers and posted a rating of 1.5 in the key demo.

ABC's shows saw decreases in ratings across the board. The network was third overall and in the key demo, with a rating of 1.8 and about 6.7 million viewers.

"Modern Family" was No. 1 in the key demo, with a rating of 2.8. However, the sitcom fell 24% from its most recent original episode on Nov. 19. It was second-most-watched program overall, with almost 9 million viewers.

"Black-ish" was down 19%, with a 2.1 rating in the key demo. It averaged 6.8 million viewers.

"The Middle" was the fifth-most-watched program of the night, with 7.1 million viewers, but fell 27% from its most recent original episode on Nov. 19.

"The Goldbergs" dipped 29% as well, posting a rating of 1.7 in the key demo. It averaged 6.6 million viewers.

Fox rounded out the top five networks in the key demo with a rating of 1.1. "Hell's Kitchen," which posted a rating of 1.2 in the key demo, was up 9% from last week. The cooking competition averaged 3.6 million viewers.

"Red Band Society" posted a rating of 0.9 in the key demo, up 29% from last week. It drew in 3.1 million viewers.

Meanwhile, the CW's crossover episode of "Arrow" and "The Flash" was up 56% from "Arrow's" most recent original episode.

It averaged a rating of 1.4 in the key demo and 3.8 million viewers. It was the highest-rated episode of "Arrow" ever and the most watched since the series premiere on Oct. 10.
