What time are the 2012 Emmy Awards? And what will Jimmy Kimmel do?

Share

In 1999, Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel and pal Adam Carolla gave viewers “The Man Show,” a Comedy Central program that celebrated and mocked the stereotypical guy with such segments as “Girls Jumping on Trampolines.” Kimmel and Carolla wore untucked shirts and quaffed copious amounts of beer.

On Sunday, Kimmel is not only donning a tuxedo and hosting the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, but he could raise a champagne glass if “The Jimmy Kimmel Show” wins for best variety series.

One can only hope the three-hour Emmy telecast goes by as quickly as those 13 years did.

The Emmys, which are being handed out at the Nokia Theatre, will begin at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific on Sunday and will be aired live across the country on ABC. The red carpet officially starts at 2:30 p.m. Pacific.

Kimmel told CNN that the Emmy producers are “letting me do some genuinely weird stuff on the show,” but one has to wonder how much the first-time host will actually get away with. Still, you can expect Kimmel’s act to be less gentle than that of last year’s host, Jane Lynch.

As for the awards, the series competing in the best drama category include “Boardwalk Empire,” “Breaking Bad,” “Downton Abbey,” “Game of Thrones,” “Homeland” and “Mad Men.” The series up for best comedy are “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Girls,” “Modern Family” and “Veep.”

HBO leads all networks with 81 nominations. You can get a full run-down of the key races on The Envelope.

And how will Kimmel fare? He already brought a biting edge to hosting one high-profile affair this year: the White House Correspondents Dinner in April, with President Obama in attendance. Will he do the same at the Emmys?
