Golden Globes 2013: Christoph Waltz wins first award for ‘Django’

Austrian-born actor Christoph Waltz and writer-director Quentin Tarantino are making for an unbeatable Golden Globe team: For the second time in two tries, Waltz has collected a supporting actor trophy for his work in a Tarantino film.

In 2010, Waltz won the supporting actor Golden Globe for playing a heartless Nazi in Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” and on Sunday Waltz took home the same award for playing the bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz in the filmmaker’s “Django Unchained.”

Waltz went on to win the supporting actor trophy at the Academy Awards in 2010; he is nominated this year as well.

“Quentin, you know that my indebtedness to you and gratitude knows no words,” Waltz said in accepting the first prize in Sunday’s telecast. Echoing a line from the movie, he called Tarantino a “north star.”

Waltz tried to slink back to his seat after accepting his statuette, but Harvey Weinstein, who co-financed and released “Django,” had other plans.

“Christoph, get to the press room. You have to do press!” he said with his throaty cackle.

So, can Weinstein continue to steal momentum from “Lincoln” with his films “Django” and “Silver Linings Playbook”?

“We will see. We will see,” the mogul demurred.

Tarantino, meanwhile, was thrilled with Waltz’s win. “I knew he would do it,” he said with a big laugh.
