Beyonce calls herself ‘modern-day feminist’ in British Vogue

Share

Beyoncé is omnipresent. Seriously. The singer is covering all sorts of magazines the world over as she promotes her tour, the Mrs. Carter Show.

Now she’s fiercely gracing the cover of Vogue UK — as only Bey can do — and shedding even more light on her beliefs, Blue Ivy and marriage to rapper Jay-Z.

“I guess I am a modern-day feminist,” she told the mag (via NYDN). “I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman, and I love being a woman.”

The 31-year-old ultra-sexy, ultra-successful singer has proved her pride through her female-empowerment singles and electric performance at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

“I do believe in equality and that we have a way to go, and it’s something that’s pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept.”

However, the former Destiny’s Child frontwoman came under fire when she named her tour the Mrs. Carter Show, appropriating her married name from Jay-Z, 43, whose real name is Shawn Carter. And last month, she released one of her most controversial tracks yet, “Bow Down / I Been On,” which appeared to contradict her estrogen-affirming legacy and garnered her criticism. However, the track did include a bit of androgyny as she rapped in a chopped and screwed version of her voice.

“I feel like Mrs. Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been,” she told the mag. “I do believe in equality, and that we have a ways to go. … But I’m happily married. I love my husband.”

(And just last week she was outspoken about her stance on gay marriage: “If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it #wewillunite4marriageequality! B” she wrote.)

This peak of self-confidence seems to be a virtue of motherhood and her domestic bliss.

“It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do,’” she added.

“I just adore being a mother, hearing her say ‘Mama’ and call me when she needs something, it makes me feel like I have a real purpose here,” the singer said in the April issue of Shape magazine. “I enjoy all the things people warned me would be tough to handle.”

Queen Bey made her debut cover on Vogue UK’s May 2013 issue cover in a Jonathan Saunders crop top and sequined skirt ahead of the British leg of her world tour. She was photographed by Arthur Elgort.
