Kelly Clarkson ‘super excited’ about baby, predicts a girl

Kelly Clarkson’s got that pregnancy glow: You know, the one that means you can’t stop talking about being pregnant.

The “American Idol” champ hit the “Today” show Tuesday to promote her holiday album “Kelly Clarkson: Wrapped in Red” and give her first interview since announcing that she and new husband Brandon Blackstock are expecting. The “Catch My Breath” singer chatted with Savannah Guthrie about the wonderful world of maternity — and some of its less-than-wonderful aspects (see: morning sickness).

“I don’t know why they call it morning sickness — that’s my big joke right now — because it’s, like, all day and all night,” the 31-year-old said. “I am super excited about being pregnant. I’m just looking forward to the second trimester. They say it’s better.”

Clarkson, who quietly married Blackstock in Tennessee on Oct. 20, eagerly announced her pregnancy on Nov. 19 via Twitter, despite having wanted to wait a little longer before sharing the big news.

“I was just dying to tell people, but we were trying to wait until the end of my first trimester — because you’re supposed to, I guess, because you’re less likely to have a miscarriage — but everybody kept talking about it and I had to cancel something because I’ve been so ill,” she said. “So, I didn’t want people to think that I’m canceling because I’m lazy or something. So we just told people.”

Even though it’s “way too early to know,” Clarkson said she’s convinced that she’s having a girl because of “a gut feeling” and “a scientific feeling why.”

“She’s killing me,” Clarkson laughed. “Of course it’s a girl, causing the trouble.”

She then went into a ramble about the longevity of “girl sperm” and “boy sperm” that she later highlighted on Twitter.

“Remember that time I talked about sperm on the Today show ....wow. #girlsperm,” she tweeted after the appearance.

Clarkson added that they already had names picked out for a boy and a girl. But don’t expect her to spill those beans this early in her pregnancy.

“We’re not saying because I don’t want someone to steal my baby’s name,” Clarkson said, adding that they had named their child even before she became pregnant.

The singer also said that she’s glad she gets to be “a little more cheesy” on her holiday album and even wrote a song for her husband called “Brandon’s Song.”

“In my career ... everybody’s always, like, ‘Are you pop, are you country, are you rock, what are you?’ I think that what’s cool about the Christmas record is I don’t have to pick. ... There’s just a little bit of everything on it,” she said. “I’ve been making this CD in my head for years.”

The pop star said she recently wrapped her NBC variety special, “Kelly Clarkson’s Cautionary Christmas Music Tale,” which she said was hard to do while being pregnant. The comedy and music special airs Dec. 11 on NBC.
