Welcome little prince: Royal baby born to Kate and Wills

Share

Take it from the town crier: The royal baby has been born, and boy is he a little prince.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to an 8-pound, 6-ounce son at 4:24 p.m. London time, 8:24 a.m. PDT — name to be announced “in due course,” according to palace officials. He’s the third in line to the throne, behind his daddy and grandpa.

A true modern husband, Prince William was present for the birth. His wife had gone into labor around 6 a.m. London time.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” palace officials said in a statement Monday evening.

Being born on July 22 makes baby boy Cambridge a Cancer, for those of you keeping track of such things. He shares a birthday with Albert Brooks, Bobby Sherman, Willem Dafoe, John Leguizamo, David Spade and 21-years-old-today Selena Gomez, to name a few.

“Congrats to William and Kate,” Brooks tweeted. “Your son shares the same birthday as I do.” He then followed up on a typically wry note, adding, “Let’s give a little recognition to the horse that was born today that the kid will use for polo.”

The official announcements were a bit more formal.

“The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news,” palace officials said in a statement.

The news was made public electronically before an official certificate was posted on an easel outside Buckingham Palace. The queen, however, got the first phone call.

Prince Charles, first in line to the throne now held by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was quite the proud grandpapa.

“Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild,” he said in a statement, referring to wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. “It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.

“Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life as countless kind people have told me in recent months,” Charles continued, “so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”

Also in the near future is more pomp and circumstance — while we got a town crier crowing the news on Monday, expect a 41-gun salute in the prince’s honor come Tuesday afternoon.
