Royal baby: British babies born on the same day get a $42 penny

Share

Parents whose little one is born the same day as the royal baby will have a souvenir to remind them of their coincidental good fortune: Britain’s Royal Mint is giving away 2,013 commemorative coins to newborns entering the world on the same day.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — Prince William and the former Kate Middleton — are expecting their child in the middle of July. Though Kate may have slipped and given out the sex of the baby, the official story is that they’ve opted not to know the gender in advance.

“The birth of the royal baby will be a joyous occasion not just for Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge but also for the whole nation, as we prepare to celebrate another remarkable milestone in their life journey together,” Shane Bissett, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, said in a statement.

“However, it will also be a special day for many mothers and fathers across the country as they too welcome the arrival of their new baby, hence why we wanted to extend this historical moment to them with a lucky silver penny.”

The penny — which goes for 28 pounds, or about $42 — will be presented in a pink or blue pouch and has a design bearing part of a shield of the royal arms. It can be purchased by collectors and fans from the mint’s website as well.

On average, 2,000 babies are born on any given day in Britain, so 2,013 coins should get the job done, People said. Parents will have 60 days to get in touch with the Royal Mint through its Facebook page and upload a scanned copy of the tot’s birth certificate to claim one of the commemorative coins.
