Teresa Giudice and her husband Giuseppe “Joe” Giudice, two stars of “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” each posted $500,000 bail Tuesday morning in federal court in New Jersey, where they stand accused of financial fraud and more.

The Giudices face a combined 39 charges alleging they conspired to commit financial fraud to obtain mortgages and other loans, and hid assets and income when they were going through bankruptcy proceedings in 2009. Joe is also accused of failure to file income tax returns in 2004 through 2008.

Though the charges were read aloud in court Tuesday, along with the potential penalties, the couple will not enter their pleas until their arraignment on Aug. 14, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported. The two had to surrender their passports and had their travel restricted to New Jersey and New York.

A short, by-the-book hearing doesn’t mean the day was uneventful, however. Plowing through a sea of media, Joe slapped away a camera on the way into the courtroom, much to his lawyer’s chagrin, the New York Daily News reported. Afterward, his parents cussed at reporters, and his dad flipped the bird at photographers.

One twist, in addition to the maximum 50 years or so behind bars the couple could face if convicted on all counts: Having come to the U.S. legally as an infant, Joe is actually an Italian citizen and, if convicted, could face deportation back to his home country.

[For the record, 1 p.m. July 31: The headline on this post previously said the bond amount was $500 million each. It is $500,000 each.]
