Watch: Lana Del Rey plays wicked games in moody ‘West Coast’ video

When Lana Del Rey debuted “West Coast” at last month’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the song’s tremolo guitar line suggested that she’d been listening lately to Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.”

Now the video for the single makes it almost certain.

Posted Wednesday to YouTube, the “West Coast” clip feels like an homage to Herb Ritts’ iconic black-and-white video for “Wicked Game,” in which Isaak stumbles around sexily on a beach with model Helena Christensen.

That’s more or less what Del Rey does here, with a long-haired surf bro serving as her Christensen.

Del Rey being Del Rey, though, the story soon turns in a seedier (though no less glamorous) direction, as she leaves the beach and rides through darkened streets in a convertible with a tight-faced gentleman who looks a bit like an emaciated version of Scott Weiland.

Then the clip transforms into color with the singer swaying in a red dress similar to the one she wore at Coachella against a backdrop of flames and palm trees. (This part feels very Stevie Nicks, which could be a hat-tip to “West Coast’s” other apparent inspiration, “Edge of Seventeen.”)

Produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, “West Coast” is the lead single from Del Rey’s upcoming album “Ultraviolence,” expected to be released soon. Watch the video above.
