With his “Dallas Buyers Club” starring Matthew McConaughey as an AIDS patient already among the most highly anticipated films of the fall festival season, director Jean-Marc Vallee looks to already be lining up his next project. He will helm an adaptation of the bestselling memoir “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed.

As had been previously reported, Reese Witherspoon is set to star in and produce the film for Fox Searchlight. The script is being handled by Nick Hornby, author of “High Fidelity” and “About a Boy” and Oscar-nominated for his adaptation of “An Education.”

Witherspoon will play Strayed, who after her mother’s death and the end of her marriage plunges into a tailspin. Though she has no experience as a hiker, she makes a decision to hike more than 1,000 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail alone.

Besides “Dallas Buyers Club,” which has sparked great interest for the dramatic weight loss of star McConaughey, Vallee previously directed the 2009 film “The Young Victoria.” That film won an Oscar for costume design and a Golden Globe for actress Emily Blunt.

Witherspoon was onscreen earlier this year with a small role in “Mud,” which also starred McConaughey and has quietly gone on to be the top-grossing indie release of the year so far, bringing in more than $21 million at the box office.
