Santa Monica Pier film series to screen ‘The Sting,’ ‘Snoopy’ and more

The Santa Monica Pier’s Front Porch Cinema series kicks off a second year of free films over four Fridays starting Sept. 27. This year, Front Porch is collaborating on the series with Film Independent.

Doug Jones, the nonprofit arts organization’s associate director of programming, has selected the diverse films for the festival.

“Watching movies outdoors under the stars is always fun, and to be able to do it on the historic Santa Monica Pier is especially cool,” Jones said in a statement. “It’s a unique experience and a great opportunity to discover some new films and revisit a few classics with Los Angeles and Santa Monica audiences.”

The series opens with the Los Angeles premiere of the documentary “Los Wild Ones,” which chronicles L.A. indie label Wild Records and its founder, Rob Kennedy. The evening will also feature a live performance from the Rhythm Shakers.

Front Porch Cinema celebrates the 40th anniversary on Oct. 4 of the Oscar-winning film “The Sting,” directed by George Roy Hill and starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. There will be a ragtime pianist performing.

The pier holds its first Doggie Drive-In on Oct. 11 with a screening of the 1972 animated hit “Snoopy Come Home!” Families are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends to the screening.

The series concludes Oct. 18 with the 2012 documentary “Chasing Ice.”
