Avicii to play Hollywood Bowl Nov. 9

Avicii has gone from being EDM’s cautionary tale to the mega-star everyone initially suspected he might become. All it took was a little bluegrass.

The Swedish producer, riding his latest hillbilly-dance-floor smash “Wake Me Up,” has just announced a solo headlining date at the Hollywood Bowl on Nov. 19.

Tickets for the general public go on sale at noon Friday. Sander van Doorn and Excision will open.

Avicii isn’t the first electronic act to headline the Bowl (we remember a distinctly loud Chemical Brothers show a few years back). But his set is a sign that mainstream EDM can play iconic venues in America, not just its shiniest arenas.

CRITICS’ PICKS: What to watch, where to go, what to eat

Just a few years ago, Avicii was seen as a sign of EDM’s overreach, after a planned starmaking arena tour was scuttled and downsized. Genre-watchers wondered if his hit “Le7els” was lightning that wouldn’t strike twice.

But he found new winds at his back wih the cred-building “Silhouettes” and the wholly unexpected but now crowd-favorite bluegrass-rave crossover “Wake Me Up.” The latter single anchors his full-length album debut “True,” which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 this week.
