Telepathic waitress Sookie (Anna Paquin) is on the rebound after her split with vampire Bill Compton, and it appears that the part-fairy might soon land in the arms of  1,000-year-old Viking vampire Eric Northman. However, the hunky blond won't be himself in Season 4, after he falls under a witch's spell.  We have to assume, Sookie prefers  the new Eric to the old.

Jason Stackhouse
Sookie's older brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten) has a lot of growing up to do this season. After his girlfriend Crystal Norris took off with her half-brother (and fiancé) Felton, the lovable but dumb ladies' man has been tasked with taking care of a Hot Shot werepanther pack.

Tara Thornton
Tara (Rutina Wesley) is Sookie's loyal best friend. It may be tough being a regular human in Bon Temps, but as a fiery, quick-tempered bartender at Merlotte's, Tara holds her own despite having to take care of an alcoholic mother. In Season 4, she looks to be stronger and more calm, and may even go on something of a journey herself.

Lafayette Reynolds
The flamboyant, fast-talking fry cook at Merlotte's has a history of making money through less savory business ventures, including selling drugs, potent vampire blood and occasionally himself. Tara's cousin Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) finds himself drawn to -- and somewhat subdued by -- his boyfriend Jesus, who helps him realize his own supernatural characteristics. (May 6)

Arlene Fowler
Arlene (Carrie Preston) is a Merlotte's waitress and mother of Coby and Lisa. She's living with Terry Bellefleur, but she's carrying her serial killer ex-fiancé René Lenier's baby. She's afraid it might be evil.

Bill Compton
Bill (Stephen Moyer) is having a rough time. The Bon Temps vampire was dumped by his neighbor and girlfriend Sookie after she found out he was using her, and even worse, he's dueling with vampire queen Sophie-Anne. Luckily, he still has his progeny  Jessica  to keep him company.

Eric Northman
Fangtasia nightclub owner Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) barely escaped being sealed in cement at the end of Season 3, but his luck hasn't exactly turned around. The undead Viking still has his sights on Sookie and the upcoming story line promises to bring them in close contact.

Pamela Swynford De Beaufort
As Eric's second-in-command, Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) helps runs Fangtasia. The quick-witted vampire has a fabulous closet and a forked tongue.

Jessica Hamby
Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) was a normal human teenager when Bill was forced to turn her into a vampire as punishment for killing another bloodsucker. She now exists as Bill's ward and is forever cursed with her adolescent hormones. After a few acts of rebellion (and a few drained bodies), Jessica is settling into domestic bliss with her human boyfriend, Hoyt. But Hoyt's mother isn't pleased at all.

Sophie-Anne Leclerq
The vampire queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood) longs to feel the sun on her skin again, leading to an intense interest in the powers of Sookie's half-fairy blood. Flirtatious and manipulative, the queen married the vampire king of Mississippi , Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare), before he was dispatched by Eric.

Sam Merlotte
Sam (Sam Trammell) is the owner of Merlotte's, the most popular bar in Bon Temps. He's also a shape shifter who can transform into nearly any animal (though his preferred alternate form is that of a dog.) Sam has an on-again, off-again relationship with Tara, who works at the bar. He's taken on his estranged younger brother as an employee, but as Season 4 begins, tensions between the two have taken a violent turn.

Luna
Janina Gavankar plays Luna, a public school teacher who also happens to be a shape shifter. Not actually in the books, she is an Alan Ball creation who has a crush on Sam Merlotte, and looks to act on those instincts in the coming season.

Alcide Herveaux
The beefy werewolf works as a construction contractor and is enlisted by Eric to be Sookie's bodyguard. Alcide (Joe Manganiello) accompanies her to the underworld to find her vampire boyfriend Bill Compton after he goes missing, but things may heat up between Sookie and him in the fourth season.

Crystal Norris
Jason's werepanther girlfriend Crystal (Lindsay Pulsipher) took off with her half-brother Felton just before the drug raid of the backwoods area called Hot Shot last season; however, the mysterious beauty is definitely coming back.

Felton Norris
Crystal's half-brother Felton (James Harvey Nord) is one bad dude, and he's a werepanther to boot. He's controlling and abusive toward Crystal and admitted to using V when the show left off. He left Hot Shot with Crystal, but he’ll be back and things are about to get hairy between Jason and him.

Claudine Crane
Sookie's fairy godmother Claudine (Lara Pulver) whisks her off to a magical world at the close of Season 3. They both return to reality this season (after a narrow escape from fairyland) only now, Claudine will have her twin brother Claude by her side.

Jesus Velasquez
The attractive orderly says that his grandfather practiced dark magic and his mother traveled frequently to get away from him.  Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) takes racist jabs in stride from Lafayette's mother while she is hospitalized and becomes Lafeyette's love interest. In Season 4, he urges the fry cook to join a coven.

Holly Cleary
Holly (Lauren Bowles) is a warmhearted waitress with a flair for wicca, fairly new to Merlotte's and Bon Temps. A single mom of two, Holly connects with Arlene and helps her perform a ritual to try end Arlene's unwanted pregnancy.

Marnie
Witch Marnie (Fiona Shaw) flexes her newfound powers and connects with spirits from the past, eventually becoming the leader of a coven that threatens to take down the entire vampire establishment.

Queen Mab
Rebecca Wisocky plays the ruler of Faeland, or Fairyland, who actually has a long history in literature (Shakespeare, etc.). As Sookie is spirited to the fairy world, she discovers her grandpa, more of her power, and the queen's plans for Bon Temps and beyond.

Andy Bellefleur
Played by Chris Bauer, Bellefleur now heads up the Bon Temps police force. His family has deep roots in the community, and though he's often mocked, he knows what's going on around him to a degree. In the coming season, the show will deal with his addiction to the drug V, and explore his family's history.

Portia Bellefleur
Andy's smarter, more attractive sister Portia (Courtney Ford) joins the cast this season. But she's not the only addition to the Bellefleur family tree. The classic beauty, with the brains to match, and her brother will both discover a new piece of family history.

Terry Bellefleur
Terry (Todd Lowe) is Arlene's boyfriend, a Gulf War veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and the cook at Merlotte's. Terry is Andy Bellefleur's cousin.

Hoyt Fortenberry
Jason's friend and co-worker, Hoyt (Jim Parrack) is a sweet-natured guy who recently got out from under the controlling thumb of his mother, Maxine. Now, he's learning about love and sex with his vampire girlfriend, Jessica. Hoyt and Jessica have recently decided to shack up together and Jessica has fed off Hoyt's blood for the first time. Maxine isn't pleased about any of this.

Maxine Fortenberry
One of Bon Temps' locals, Maxine (Dale Raoul) had a husband who killed himself. But to collect the insurance money, she made it appear that a burglar shot him. She has one son, Hoyt, with whom she has a very controlling relationship. When Hoyt started seeing vampire Jessica and began to exert independence, Maxine struggled to get Hoyt back under her control. As Season 3 ended, she was seen shopping for guns.
