Robin Roberts returns to ‘GMA’ with a welcome from the Obamas
Anchor Robin Roberts made her triumphant return to “Good Morning America” on Wednesday after a lengthy medical leave that began Aug. 30.
The episode of “GMA” began with a close-up on Roberts. “I’ve been waiting 174 days to say this: ‘Good morning, America.’” She also reflected on the importance of “faith, family and friends” in helping her through her medical ordeal, which involved a bone marrow transplant for treatment of the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome.
“There’s so many people that I want to thank throughout the morning, my doctors and nurses and family and colleagues and people who have sat in this chair and those who have blazed the trail before me,” Roberts said. “As my mother said, ‘We all have something.’ Everyone’s story has purpose and meaning and value and I share this morning, this day of celebration with everyone.”
The news of Roberts’ return to television’s No. 1 morning show was officially announced on Feb. 6. In recent weeks she’s been doing trial runs at “GMA’s” Times Square studio to ensure she’s healthy enough to get back to the early morning grind.
ABC and “GMA” have closely tracked Roberts’ recovery, running a countdown clock anticipating her return, sending her on a homecoming trip to New Orleans with weatherman Sam Champion and playing commercials featuring numerous celebrity well-wishers.
Even President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama got in on the act, welcoming Roberts back Wednesday morning.
“You’ve been an inspiration to all of us,” the president said.
