‘Sharknado’ writer says he hasn’t been contacted yet about sequel

Syfy may have announced plans for a follow-up to its viral hit “Sharknado” on Wednesday, but screenwriter Thunder Levin hasn’t heard if he’ll be asked back to write the sequel.

Levin spoke with The Times for a live video chat on Wednesday and revealed that neither he nor “Sharknado” director Anthony Ferrente have heard from producers about the just-announced sequel.

Levin did say that he initially turned down the writing project, which had been called “Shark Storm” and was nowhere nearly as outrageous. But when the producers came back to him with the title “Sharknado,” he was committed.

“Sharknado” is the latest in a long tradition of low-budget horror and science-fiction thriller on Syfy, but somehow it broke out from the pack and became a legitimate social media phenomenon, with more than 300,000 tweets sent during the movie’s initial airing July 11.

Levin admitted that seeing Mia Farrow talk about “Sharknado” was one of the highlights of the social media frenzy, along with trading tweets with “Star Trek Into Darkness” screenwriter Damon Lindelof.
