Valerie Harper to appear on ‘The Doctors,’ ‘Today’

Valerie Harper’s announcement this week that she has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer sent a shock wave through her fan base, who remembers her as the feisty and lovable Rhoda Morgenstern from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Rhoda.” But now that the news has had a few days to sink in, she’s talking about it in depth.

Harper will appear on NBC’s “Today” and the syndicated daytime talk show “The Doctors” on Monday to discuss her diagnosis with the show’s hosts. She’ll also appear on CBS’ “The Talk” on Wednesday.

On “Today,” Harper talks with Savannah Guthrie in her L.A. home about her cancer, while on “The Doctors,” she’ll be with hosts Travis Stork, Lisa Masterson and Andrew Ordon. She’ll also bring her own team of doctors on to discuss her situation.

According to the Associated Press, Harper will be the only subject on the hour-long “The Doctors.” But she won’t be the only one doing the talking. Former costars Ed Asner and Cloris Leachman will make appearances on the show to surprise her.

The 73-year-old Harper had been promoting her memoir, “I, Rhoda” when she got the news that she had the rare condition leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, which occurs when cancer spreads to the fluid-filled membranes that surround the brain. On “The Doctors,” which has already taped, she reveals that the news was so grim that her husband, Tony Cacciotti, initially withheld the doctors’ test results from her.

Harper’s prognosis gives her roughly three months to live.

This isn’t Harper’s first bout with cancer. The Emmy winner recovered from lung cancer in 2009.
