WWE SummerSlam results: What happened at Staples Center

Share

For the third consecutive year, one of WWE’s “big four” pay-per-views, SummerSlam, was at Staples Center on Sunday. I was there, along with my wife, Diana and daughter, Hannah, and my new best friend: My Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy. Now dads, if you want to get your kids the perfect gift, this is it. Because you can play with it yourself. And it will talk to you, as I discovered during the show.

A recap:

SANTINO MARELLA VS. ANTONIO CESARO FOR U.S TITLE

This was the pre-show match, show live on YouTube. Santino always gets a good reaction from the crown, but he lost the title when he was pinned by Cesaro. Cesaro has a chance to be a big star if he gets the right push. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: “Let’s see what you got.” I assume he was talking to Cesaro.

CHRIS JERICHO VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER

Jericho won clean with the Walls of Jericho. This was probably the best match on the show. A good near fall came near the end when Ziggler’s adviser, Vickie Guerrero, grabbed Jericho’s leg, allowing Ziggler to use a small package, but Jericho kicked out just in time. The crowd seemed really happy they could cheer Jericho again, since he just turned from heel to babyface recently. However, rumor has it Jericho is about to take a long break to tour with his band, Fozzy, so this could be the last time we see him in the ring for a while. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: “Time for the West Coast pop.” Apparently, he thinks he could have won this match. Either that, or he’s thirsty and wants some West Coast soda pop.

KANE VS. DANIEL BRYAN

Kane went for a tombstone piledriver and Bryan got the pin with an inside cradle. Bryan was super over with the crowd, with several “Yes! Yes! Yes!” chants during the match. It was during this match that I looked around as I was dressed in my Daniel Bryan T-shirt, holding my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy, that I realized it’s pretty amazing that I’m actually married. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: “Come on!” as he apparently sensed my embarrassment.

THE MIZ VS. REY MYSTERIO FOR THE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE

Miz won with the skull-crushing finale. Crowd was sort of dead for this match. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: No reaction. He was too depressed to say anything after watching the real Rey Mysterio lose.

SHEAMUS VS. ALBERTO DEL RIO FOR THE WORLD TITLE

Controversial finish. Sheamus got the pin even though Del Rio clearly had his foot on the bottom rope. It seemed to be the start of a double turn, as Sheamus got some boos after the match and Del Rio got some cheers. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: “Here comes the Mysterio express!” He must want to take the train home.

KOFI KINGSTON & R-TRUTH VS. TITUS O’NEIL & DARREN YOUNG FOR TAG TITLES

Kingston and R-Truth retain the titles after R-Truth pinned Young with the downward spiral. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: No reaction. He left to get a drink from the concession stand. $5 for a small Coke? Really?

C.M. PUNK VS. BIG SHOW VS. JOHN CENA FOR THE WWE TITLE

Although he has been showing signs of a heel turn, Punk was cheered by 95% of the crowd. Cena got his usual half-love-him, half-hate-him reaction. And The Big Show was just there to take up space, it seemed. Punk retained when he covered Show for the pin after Punk threw Cena out of the ring after Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment on Show. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: “Time for the 619.” Once again, though he’s only 1-foot tall and weighs about a pound, he thinks he can win.

BROCK LESNAR VS. HHH

Lesnar won clean with the Kimura submission. The crowd just fell asleep during this match, with a “This is boring” chant starting from some halfway through it. After the match, a large part of the crowd chanted “You tapped out!” to Triple H, which is probably not the reaction they were going for. Reaction from my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy: “Giving up so soon?” Wow, even a toy is calling out Triple H for tapping out.

All in all, it was a great show. WWE always gives fans their money’s worth in person. Now, only 364 more days until next year’s SummerSlam, which will once again be at Staples Center. Hopefully the batteries in my Rey Mysterio Brawlin’ Buddy will last that long.
