Calvin Klein launches Downtown fragrance, fetes Rooney Mara film

Downtown, the new Calvin Klein women’s fragrance fronted by Rooney Mara (which we first told you about back in May) was given an official launch party Tuesday night at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, an event that also included a special screening of Mara’s latest film, “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” which hits theaters Aug. 16.

Mara and co-star Ben Foster both wore Calvin Klein Collection to the IFC Films- and Cinema Society-sponsored screening, whose notable attendees included Richard Gere, Robin Wright, Courtney Love, Keith Carradine (who also appears in the movie) and the film’s writer and director David Lowery.

We have yet to take a whiff of the new perfume ourselves, but the folks at Coty Prestige (the actual makers of the scent) describe it as “open[ing] with bright top notes of Italian cedrat, bergamot and Tunisian neroli,” having middle notes redolent of “pink peppercorn dusted over violet leaf and gardenia petals,” and a dry down that evokes “Texan cedarwood with touches of incense, vetiver and warm velvet musks.”

As if that doesn’t sound intriguingly complex enough, the black-and-white advertising campaign in support of the fragrance was directed by David Fincher and includes a short film featuring Mara and set in New York City (the downtown part, we can only presume).

Downtown Calvin Klein (prices start at $45 for a 1-ounce eau de parfum spray) rolls out to department and specialty stores nationwide Sept. 1.
