A jaunty striped jacket worn by Dick Van Dyke’s Bert the chimney sweep character in Disney’s 1964 multiple-Oscar-winning musical “Mary Poppins” is up for bid in a quick two-day online auction, the Nate D. Sanders auction house announced Tuesday.

The jacket (or versions of it — it’s worth noting that costume designers routinely create multiples of each garment — it was even that way with Dorothy’s ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz”) is worn by Van Dyke’s character in the memorable live action/animation scene in which his character Bert sings “Jolly Holiday” and dances it out with a passel of penguins.

The auction house sent along the following description:

“Jacket is designed with vertical stripes running throughout in pink and mango tones. With a lining in red, jacket has two inside flaps that served as makeshift hooks for a moment in the scene when he was lifted to sing along with some birds. Original tag reads, ‘Western Costume Co. Hollywood / No. 2764-1 / Name: Dick Van Dyke / Chest: 39 1/2 / Sleeve: 17 1/2’ in inches, [with] a second ‘Western Costume Co.’ stamp [in the jacket] lining. Measures 33’’ in length.”

It also includes, the description notes, an original tag from a 1993 Christie’s auction. If the Christie’s website is accurate (and we have no reason to believe it wouldn’t be) this jacket fetched $4,370 back on June 19, 1993.

It’ll be interesting to see if the current environment — the upcoming Poppins-related film “Saving Mr. Banks” (which hits theaters just before Christmas) and/or Van Dyke’s recent car fire — results in a higher price tag this time around.

As of this writing, the current high bid for the jacket is $4,431 (it opened at a minimum bid of $2,500). The auction is open until Thursday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. PDT, with bids being accepted online or by phone at (310) 440-2982.
