New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Oscar de la Renta review
NEW YORK -- It was an exuberant expression of springtime femininity, floral prints, polka dots and full skirts galore, when Oscar de la Renta, the lovable patriarch of American fashion, showed his spring collection Tuesday afternoon at New York Fashion Week.
The look: Fresh, flirty and feminine, which is a look that’s been popular among fashionable showgoers here this week, many of whom are wearing swingy 1950s-esque full skirts with white button-down menswear-style shirts tucked in.
Key pieces: Navy and white gingham check sleeveless coat dress; lapis and white abstract houndstooth fit ‘n’ flare dress; black puff sleeve peasant blouse and lace applique skirt; multicolor polka dot floral silk fit n’ flare dress; ivory and gold damask tunic dress; coral crushed silk taffeta and tulle petals cocktail dress that looked like a flower in motion coming down the runway; blush silk faille gown with all-over silver bullion embroidery; sculptural resin flower jewelry.
The verdict: You couldn’t help falling for these princess-like clothes, some of which will no doubt make their way to the red carpet soon. During the finale, when model Joan Smalls planted a smooch on the designer’s cheek, the feeling was universal.
