From bateau-style T-shirts, to Marc Jacobs’ spring 2012 graphic Mod black-and-white runway extravaganza and beyond, stripes are the fashion trend that just won’t end.

They’ve been hot on the streets and at retail for going on four years now. But whereas most celebs would have shied away from wearing potentially unflattering lines on the red carpet, that’s not the case now.

Tuesday night at a screening of “American Hustle” in Los Angeles, Amy Adams chose a spring 2014 black-and-white stripe pencil dress by London-based designer David Koma. I like the detail of the sexy sheer skirt, which is edgier than what we’re used to seeing from the actress, even if she didn’t seem altogether comfortable with it.

As the originators of the traditional Breton fisherman’s tee worn by everyone from Pablo Picasso to Brigitte Bardot, the French have always had a flair for stripes. And on Nov. 30 at the Marrakesh International Film Festival, French actress Marion Cotillard wore a charming candy-striped sleeveless silk top and skirt by Dior’s Raf Simons, which was a festive choice for an event in a resort locale.

Leighton Meester worked an even more relaxed take on the trend, wearing a Marchesa Voyage resort 2014 striped floral top and matching slouchy trousers for a Biotherm Presentation on Nov. 21 in Shanghai. (I am really liking Marchesa’s new lower-priced contemporary collection Voyage, designed by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, and available at department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks and Bloomingdales.)

Stripes are a perennial, nautical-inspired touchstone for designers for resort and spring collections. But Indian American designer Naeem Khan put an artistic twist on lines for spring 2014, as seen in the rainbow-hued, brushstroke stripe gown worn by Padma Laskshmi to the Alzheimer’s Assn.’s 30th anniversary Rita Hayworth Gala in New York on Oct. 22.
